Upper Cut Hair Design – Logo Development

Upper Cut Hair Design is a hair salon run by Kelly Trye. She has a professional salon in her home where clients will get a relaxing, pampering experience with all the trimmings.

Now to be honest, this was a logo that didn’t come easy. In a way it makes it more interesting as I had to push myself further with both the research aspect and liaising with the client. But, we did get there in the end! And this is the result.

There were Four different phases to this design. The first being the research component. The research being perhaps the most valuable step, as this is where you gather your information from the client and assemble ideas for the design. After going through my Client Work sheet I came up with a brief for this logo. This when I will email the client so that we are all on the same page.

In this case the brief was to have the logo convey:
• Approachability
• people feel good about themselves
• Listen
• Salon built in your home is professional
• Target market is 22-45 age, easy going, hard working, woman that want to be pampered and have time out from life
• Use already established colour and look

The design was to be:
• Funky
• Clear
• Easily recognizable
• People will link the image with “Upper Cut Hair Design”

Then the logo development it’s self. I usually use a mixture of drawings in my sketch book and Illustrator. Here is cross section of some of the stages I went though.

Then after a few false starts and dead ends I asked the client to ‘trawl’ the internet and send me a few pictures of what she acutally envisioned her logo too look like. Although I was already heading in that direction I felt it was necessary to prohibit myself from ‘wasting’ any more time.

Kiwi Totters Logo

Kiwi Totters Logo

Kiwi Totters is a gorgeous soft soled shoes made by Jess of Exquisite Baby (in New Zealand) and I had the pleasure of designing the logo.

The brief for this logo was simply to keep it ‘Fun and Kiwi like’ so I endeavored to incorporate a strong kiwi/earthy feel with this design while also linking it together with the feet the shoe will attire.

Onesie Bummsie – Logo Development

Onesie Bummsie Logo

Onesie Bummsie is a small business run by entrepreneur Jess, who has come up with, what is in my opinion, a fantastic and invaluable product and invaluable to any parent who like myself use cloth nappies. The concept is actually very simple but works so well.

A Onesie Bummsie is an extender that snaps in between the legs to get that extra mileage out your babies Bodysuit or Onesie. Often (and I have found this myself) cloth nappies mean that onesies or body suits don’t fit over them, and even if you are using disposables babies grow sooo fast its hard to keep up with them! This is a little demo.

Onesie Bummsie How to use

Instructions on how to use your Onesie Bummsie

In the words of ‘Onesie Bummie‘, its ‘The little extender that goes a long way’

I set to designing Onesie Bummsie a logo keeping in mind a score of things. Including keeping it playful, childlike and cute while conveying to the the consumer what Onesie Bummsie is for and about.

Like I do when start out designing anything I first grab out my ever present sketch pad and followed my creative nose by drawing out a couple of ideas that end up crowding my brain. Running parallel to this I also set about doing some research on the business, noting down ideas and directions my design may follow.

And the stationary was soon to follow.

I was lucky with this one I think. The idea manifested itself inside my head and I chased it to a satisfying completion. Once when I was much younger I met the composer Howard Blake who wrote both music and lyrics for the movie ‘The Snowman’ and he told me that if a piece of music didn’t come to fruition within several days then he would abandon it as it was never meant to be. I feel much the same way about my design work.
